On 27 August 1979 Lord Mountbatten was murdered while fishing just off the shore near Donegal Bay when bomb exploded killing Mountbatten and two teenagers on board.

A young boy who was on the shore just a couple of hundred yards from where the explosion took place describes what he saw. An elderly farmer, who was bailing hay in the fields close to the shore, describes seeing the boat coming out of the harbour and hearing a loud explosion.

I seen the smoke and debris going up... When the dust went away, there was nothing there.

These accounts were broadcast as part of an RTÉ News report on 27 August 1979.
