'Ireland and France' is the theme of the 1981 Merriman Summer School in Ennistymon, County Clare.

At the Fall's Hotel in Ennistymon poet John Montague reads an excerpt from 'The Hag of Beara' to a record number of attendees at the 1981 Merriman Summer School.

Director of the Merriman Summer School Bob Collins discusses the theme of the festival - the relationship between Ireland and France, which is the subject of lectures and symposiums taking place during the summer school. 

The Merriman Summer School is a celebration of the Irish language, Irish culture and society, and County Clare. The first Merriman School was held in 1968
