Sittings at Seanad Éireann were televised for the first time on 17 April 1991 with a two hour broadcast on RTÉ.
The plan is to broadcast extracts from future debates on RTÉ News bulletins with extended coverage on the nightly Oireachtas report on Network 2. For the first time the television viewers will be able to see what goes on in the Seanad chamber.
As with Dáil Éireann coverage the contract for broadcasting from the Seanad was awarded to Windmill Lane Pictures Ltd.
This RTÉ News report shows debates from the chamber on reforming the Seanad, aid for Kurdish refugees, and the environmental protection agency. Those featured in the report include Cathaoireleach Sean Doherty, Senator Tras Honan, David Norris, Maurice Manning, Carmentcita Hederman, Joe Costello, Shane Ross and Minister of State Mary Harney.
