The French National Circus begins a tour of Ireland with a mass in a tent in Drogheda.

In one of the oldest traditions of the sawdust ring the tent had to be blessed and mass said before the circus could commence.

Circus owner and clown René Chabre spoke to RTÉ News about the importance of this ceremony for his Catholic family. After the blessing of the new circus tent, rehearsals get began with the circus band, dancing horses, jugglers, balancers, and of course the clowns.

An RTÉ News report by Michael Lally broadcast on 2 August 1985.
