RTÉ viewers pick Paul McGrath as their favourite Republic of Ireland player for the 1990 World Cup.

Paul McGrath was presented with a Tipperary Crystal trophy by Paul O'Shaughnessy, marketing director of Bord Gáis, in RTÉ's World Cup studio. Fred Cogley of RTÉ Sport talks about why he thinks television viewer choose Paul McGrath as the Irish player of the tournament.

Accepting the award, McGrath paid tribute to all the other members of the Republic of Ireland soccer team, pointing out that there were 22 of them on the football pitch.

We went out there to enjoy ourselves obviously, and we did that. But I think getting into the quarter finals and playing against Italy in Rome was something special.

John Murray reports for RTÉ News on 8 July 1990.
