A young altar girl has been making the headlines. Her name is Jenny Ryan.

Altar girl Jenny Ryan made headlines in 1990 when a bishop banned her from serving at confirmation. The 11 year old had been serving mass for two years at her local parish chruch in Dublin. She tells presenter Andy Ruane how used she feels in this extract from 'Scratch Saturday'.

It was the Catholic Church's position at the time that females were not allowed to act as altar servers. In 1994 the Vatican sent a letter to bishops around the world giving the seal of approval for altar girls. But it stressed that the new ruling would have no impact on the Catholic Church's continued opposition to the ordination of women.

This edition of 'Scratch Saturday' was broadcast on 14 April 1990.
