Simultaneous Rallies for Peace in Belfast and Dublin

On 19 January 1975 SDLP leader Gerry Fitt was among 12,000 people at a peace protest at City Hall in Belfast. Fitt along with other members the party left the SDLP annual convention at the Europa Hotel to attend the rally.

This footage shows Gerry Fitt and Paddy O'Hanlon on their way to the rally.

A similar peace march took place in Dublin led by Dr. Alan Buchanan, Archbishop of Dublin. The march was attended by Dr. Garret FitzGerald and Dr. Conor Cruise O'Brien.

The simultaneous parades for peace in both Belfast and Dublin coincided with renewed peace talks between Sinn Féin and Stormont civil servants.
