In 1979 Charles Haughey was elected leader of the Fianna Fáil political party.
Following the resignation of Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader Jack Lynch, the position as leader became available and was contested by both Charles Haughey and the Tánaiste, George Colley. Haughey won the leadership battle.
