In 1974 Don Givens scored a hat-trick as Ireland defeated USSR in Dalymount Park.

In this radio clip Philip Greene provides the commentary as Givens, the 25 year old striker from Limerick, scores three goals at 22, 30 and 70 minutes.

The Ireland team also included Captain Johnny Giles, Joe Kinnear, Terry Mancini, Liam Brady and Ray Treacy.

A crowd of almost 35,000 gathered at Dalymount to watch Ireland triumph over Russia, in a game that saw Don Givens celebrate his 25th cap with the first hat-trick ever by a Republic of Ireland player in the European Nations' Cup.

This report by Philip Green was broadcast on 30 October 1974.
