Happy Birthday 'Fair City'! The RTÉ soap is 25 years old today. Set in the fictional Dublin suburb of Carrigstown, it began broadcasting once a week on 18 September 1989. It now goes out four times a week.

This RTÉ News report is from the day of the very first broadcast. Alasdair Jackson meets producer Margaret Gleeson, who says the new soap is not 'Eastenders' and is very much set in Dublin of the 1980s. The cast are all very excited. Those interviewed include Charlie Roberts, Sighle Tóibín, Éanna MacLiam and Doreen Keogh.
