On 10 September 1999 Pat Kenny presented his first Late Late Show, taking over from Gay Byrne who had hosted the show since 1962.

Kenny went on to host the show for ten years before being replaced by Ryan Tubridy who currently presents the Late Late Show.

On Pat Kenny's first day on the job RTÉ News caught up with him prior to the show.

As well as a new presenter the signature tune and studio set were revamped as apart of a new look Late Late Show.

Pat Kenny comments that while the ghost of Gay Byrne haunts the studio, he believes the new show will get a positive reaction from viewers.

Guests on the first show included Sir George Martin, Sonia O'Sullivan, Roy Keane, and Mary Black.
