Ronnie Delany Wins 880 at Trinity College

An athletics meeting promoted by the Crusaders club and featuring the American national team was held in the grounds of a packed Trinity College Dublin on 4 August 1954. The most eagerly awaited race was the 880 yards which was won by Ireland's Ronnie Delany with Laing Sanley from the USA in second place. Ronnie is congratulated by his father.

The footage here is taken from film shot by Norman Hodgson. Norman was an avid amateur filmmaker who recorded many sporting and social highlights of Irish life (much of it in colour) in the late 1940s and 1950s. For more on the films of Norman Hodgson see our exhibition Amateur Films RTÉ Archives
