Limerick's First Special Olympics 1981

The competitions in this year's Special Olympics Ireland Games get under way today in venues throughout Limerick. The event was first held in the city in 1981, at the Thomond PE College over the weekend of 25 and 26 April.

This RTÉ News report by Michael Walsh was broadcast on 27 April 1981 and shows highlights of the games. Organiser Aidan Ryan says the Special Olympics give participants the chance to show their talents and express themselves. There was much support from the people of Limerick over the weekend. Jenny Duncan from Northern Ireland describes winning her race.
