Limerick You're A Lady

In 1979 Limerick based singer/songwriter Denis Allen was asked to write a song for the Limerick Lady Festival. The result was 'Limerick You're A Lady'. The song went to number one in Ireland for several weeks and has since been recorded by over 40 different artists including Joe Dolan and Daniel O'Donnell.

This report from RTÉ News shows the contestants arriving at the festival and meeting master of ceremonies Mike Murphy. The winner of the Limerick Lady Festival beauty contest in 1979 was Josephine O'Meara. Josephine received £2,000 and an all expenses paid holiday to Spain for two.

As part of the Limerick Lady Festival, there was also a competition for the most adorable granny in Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary.

The footage is accompanied by Denis Allen's hit 'Limerick You're A Lady'.

This report for RTÉ News was broadcast on 25 May 1979.
