'Newsround' reports on 1 April 1979 on objections to a campaign to open a bridge between Passage East in Waterford and Ballyhack in Wexford.

The Bridge the Gap campaign wants to see the existing train bridge converted to carry cars. Motorists have to either take the ferry or drive a long way around if they want to travel between the two villages. But Chairman of the New Ross Harbour Board Andy Minihan believes that a bridge for cars would never be allowed. Russell Jacob of the New Ross Traders Association says that such a bridge would be detrimental to New Ross because it benefits from passing trade that would instead be diverted to Waterford.

Bridge the Gap say they will continue their campaign.
