On 17 March 2004 former RTÉ London Editor, Mike Burns, received an MBE from Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. The award acknowledges his services to UK-Irish relations throughout his career.

Mike Burns began his career as a reporter for the Sunday Independent and Sunday Review. In 1963 he joined RTÉ as a writer for the RTV Guide (now the RTÉ Guide). From there he moved on to news features, and was one of the early reporters on the escalating violence in Northern Ireland, for which he earned a Jacob's award.

In 1971 he co-authored the Burns-Liston report, which was highly critical of RTÉ News. He moved to London when he became London editor and was PR for the British and Irish Inter-Parliamentary body between 1990 and 2009.

This report shows Burns being decorated by the Queen and then posing for photographs with his family following the ceremony outside Buckingham Palace.
