Arkle Wins Cheltenham Gold Cup 1964

On 7 March, 1964 Arkle beat the 1963 winner Mill House to take the title at the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Arkle was bred in county Meath, owned by Anne Grosvenor, Duchess of Westminster, trained by Tom Dreaper, and ridden by Pat Taaffe.

Arkle raced for six seasons and in that time won 27 races, 22 chases, 4 hurdle races and 1 flat race. He set the world alight with his first Cheltenham Gold Cup win 50 years ago when he beat the 1963 winner Mill House to take the title. Arkle went on to win three consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups.

Here we listen back to the closing moments of the race and reflect on what made Arkle such a champion.

The documentary ‘Talking Sport – Arkle’ was made by Noel Coughlan for the twentieth anniversary of this event in 1984.
