The State of Irish Theatre

The Dublin Theatre Festival starts today and runs until 13 October. The festival has been bringing major Irish and international shows to Dublin stages since 1957.

In 1983 the first episode of 'The Live Arts Show' on RTÉ Television looked at the current state of Irish theatre. In this TV clip, Moya Doherty compares the success of the most recent Dublin Theatre Festival to the threats facing the industry. Vincent O'Neill and Willie Kennedy of the Oscar Mime Company perform a short extract from their show 'Pol'.

'The Live Arts Show' was a monthly series about the arts in Ireland, presented live by Moya Doherty and John Hutchinson. It ran for one season only, from autumn 1983 to summer 1984.
The first episode was broadcast on 17 October 1983.

Moya Doherty went on to produce the internationally successful show 'Riverdance' in 1995.
