Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival

The Lisdoonvarna Match Making Festival kicks off this weekend.

RTÉ Archives takes a look back 30 years to 1983 when the festival caught the attention of the world media as American ladies flocked to the town in search of Irish farmers as potential husbands.

Michael Walsh reports from Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare where he speaks to American Marilyn O'Connor who predicts a budding romance with a sheep farmer from the west of Ireland.

This report was broadcast on RTÉ Radio as part of the 'This Week' programme on 11 September, 1983.
