Irish Watchdog Elected European Ombudsman

Emily O'Reilly has been elected as the first female European Ombudsman and assumes responsibility for investigating public complaints about European institutions and their agencies.

In 2003 Emily became Ireland's first female Ombudsman. Prior to holding this position Emily was an award winning journalist writing for The Irish Press, the Sunday Tribune, The Sunday Times and The Sunday Business Post. She also briefly held the position as editor of Magill magazine.

The accompanying photograph above shows Emily O'Reilly at the AT Cross Award for 'Woman Journalist of the Year' in 1986. At the award ceremony, Emily was presented with the prize of £1,000, which she donated to Women’s Aid.
