President Kennedy Leaves Ireland

President Kennedy's four-day visit to Ireland came to an end on Saturday 29 June 1963. He flew out of Shannon Airport with pomp and ceremony to continue his European tour.

This TV clip shows President Kennedy's farewell address. He thanks Irish President Éamon de Valera, the Taoiseach Seán Lemass and the people of Ireland for the welcome he has received. Quoting lines from a poem Sinéad de Valera had recited to him the previous night, he says that he will return to see “old Shannon’s face again”.

The event itself was broadcast live on 29 June 1963.
