Ireland Prepares for Kennedy Visit 1963

Less than a week to go before President Kennedy arrives in Ireland and preparations are well and truly underway throughout the country.

This RTÉ News report shows the US Ambassador, Matthew McCloskey, the Minister for Justice, Charles Haughey and Garda Commissioner Costigan arriving by helicopter at Collins Barracks in Cork. This is where President Kennedy will land when he himself travels by helicopter to receive the freedom of Cork the following week.

There are shots of New Ross, Co. Wexford, where shop fronts are being cleaned and painted, and paving stones are being laid. President Kennedy is due to visit New Ross to give a speech at the quayside from where his great-grandfather emigrated.

The footage also shows the US government's radio air force plane "Talking Bird" at Dublin Airport.

This report was broadcast on 20 June 1963.
