As the Bus Éireann dispute continues leading to the cancellation of services across the country, RTÉ Archives look back to the nationwide bus strike of 1979.

During the strike the army steps in to transport commuters to work.

In this RTÉ News report from 18 January 1979 Seán Carberry speaks to members of the public about travelling to work in army lorries.

The service was provided free-of-charge by the army and continued for the duration of the bus workers dispute.
