Gael Linn is 60 years old today. Lá breithe sona duit. Gael Linn was founded in 1953 to promote the Irish language. It organises classes and activities for students of all ages. As a music label, it has released records by Ireland’s major folk and traditional musicians, including Skara Brae and Clannad.

Gael Linn also produced a series of newsreels, 'Amharc Éireann', which ran from 1956 to 1964. The first 36 releases were short films each on an individual subject matter. In 1959 'Amharc Éireann' became a weekly newsreel which was exhibited nationally in cinemas.

Shown here is the fourth weekly 'Amharc Éireann' from 1959 and features the inauguration of Éamon de Valera as president, currach racing, the visit of Walt Disney to Dublin and clay pigeon shooting. It follows the usual format of four stories voiced in the Irish language but with English intertitles.
