To mark International Jazz Day today 30 April, RTÉ Archives look back to 1953. Influential jazz musician Stan Kenton played two concerts at the Theatre Royal in Dublin in September 1953 attracting thousands of fans. Kenton is interviewed by George Desmond Hutton and speaks about progressive jazz, big band swing and bop music.
The accompanying image shows the Theatre Royal, on Hawkins Street, Dublin which officially opened on 23 September 1935 and closed on 30 June 1962. This photograph is taken from the RTÉ Cashman Collection.
