On this day in 1979 a campaign to save thatching in Ireland is launched in Co. Galway.
RTÉ News reports on the campaign to save thatching, the craft of building a roof using straw or other vegetation, through the provision of training in the craft. The campaign is jointly launched by ANCO (An Comhairle Oiliúna) and Gaeltarra Éireann and the first set of trainees are well on their way to becoming expert thatchers.
Master Thatcher, Jimmy Moran from Hedford is overseeing the training programme. Mr Des Toal, Senior Training Advisor with AnCo the vocation training organisation, is interviewed by RTÉ News about the training and commends the work being done to revive and retain the craft.
This report was first broadcast on 19 April 1979.
