Red Rum Wins 1st Grand National 1973

Ahead of tomorrow's Grand National RTÉ Archives look back 40 years to the first win for Red Rum. Red Rum is the only horse to have won the Grand National three times, in 1973, 1974, and 1977.

The 1973 Grand National took place on the 31st of March and marks the first Grand National win for Red Rum. In the closing minute of the race it is a "two horse race" between Crisp and Red Rum. The dramatic race to the end is often thought to have been one of the greatest racing moments and one of the best Grand Nationals. Red Rum was trained by Ginger McCain and ridden by Brian Fletcher.
