On this day in 1985 RTÉ News moves from using film cameras to cover stories for television to using video. Electronic News Gathering (ENG) is born.
By 1985 RTÉ had almost completed replacing the film cameras used by news crews with video cameras. Film had been the main media for news coverage since RTÉ began broadcasting in 1961. ENG would allow more flexibility in reporting and stories could be brought to air as they happened. This report features Gerry Murray, Wesley Boyd, Jim Eccles and Josie McGarrigle as well as other members of RTÉ staff from the regional offices.
This report by Tommie Gorman and Jim Fahy was broadcast on 26 March 1985.
