High School Win Leinster Senior Cup 1973

The build-up to next Monday’s Leinster Senior Schools Cup Final between Blackrock College and St Michael's is under way. Take a look here at highlights from forty years ago when High School won their only Senior Cup.

High School led by future internationals Ian Burns and John Robbie won their first Leinster Schools Senior Cup on 17 March 1973. Ian Burns playing at outhalf scored two tries and dropped two goals. Scrumhalf John Robbie kicked a conversion and two penalties. Opponents Belvedere were confined to scoring just the one penalty from M Hickey and a late try from P Daly.

Ian Burns was capped once at senior level for Ireland against England in 1980. John Robbie was capped nine times for Ireland and once for the British and Irish Lions. In 1981 he went to live in South Africa where he continued to play rugby before forging a career in broadcasting. He now presents the John Robbie Show for South African broadcaster 702 Talk Radio.

The footage shown here is taken from film shot for Old Belvedere Rugby Club by John D. O'Brien a former Executive Producer in RTÉ Television Sport. John was himself a keen rugby player for many years for school and club. John also produced most of RTÉ's rugby coverage between 1980 and 2003.
