On this day 11 years ago, a plastic bag levy was introduced.

A plastic bag levy of 15 cent was first introduced in Ireland on 4 March 2002. In a RTÉ News report from that day, there are mixed reviews from shoppers on the streets of Dublin. Plastic bags are used for minutes but last for hundreds of years. The aim of the levy is to eliminate their use all together.

Paul Cunningham reports for RTÉ News on 4 March, 2002.
The levy had an immediate effect on consmuer behaviour with a estimated decrease in plastic bag usage from 328 bags per capita to 21 bags per capita overnight.
