National Song Contest 1978

As Ireland's representative for the Eurovision will be chosen tonight, RTÉ Archives takes a look back to 1978 and preparations at RTÉ Studio 1 for what was then called the National Song Contest. The show was presented by Mike Murphy and this RTÉ News report shows the crew and production team at work in preparation for the nights events.

Each of the eight finalists recieve £100, while the winner receives £500 and entry to the Eurovision Song Contest to be held on the 22 April 1978. Colm Wilkinson went on to win the National Song Contest and represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 1978 where he came in fifth place.

Ireland's representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 will be determined tonight on The Late Late Show. Five songs will be performed live and the winner will be chosen by a combination of a regional jury and a public vote. The winning act will represent Ireland at the Eurovision to be held in Sweden in May.

Eurosong 2013 takes place on The Late Late Show, February 22, at 9:35pm.
