The Fairy Tree

On this day in 1983, 'The Live Mike' broadcast a piece about a fairy tree in Ardagh, Longford. The tree was on land owned by Jim Sweeney. There was a saying that when the tree fell, the last of the Sweeneys would die. As Jim was the last of the Sweeneys, he was doing everything in his power to keep it alive! He hadn't given up hope of finding a wife either.

Jim tells Mike Murphy all about his efforts in this clip. Does anybody know what became of him and the tree? Contact us at archives@rte.ie or on Twitter @RTEArchives.

'The Live Mike' first aired on RTÉ 1 on 9 November 1979. It was billed as a one-hour Friday-night programme of comment, entertainment and surprises. The programme also contained a candid-camera slot in which Mike Murphy and his team took on many disguises.
