In the mid 1990s RTÉ began to introduce widescreen television broadcasting on an experimental basis.
Two hundred and fifty hours of widescreen programming mainly made up of feature films, documentaries and music programmes were broadcast on Network Two (RTÉ 2) on a Saturday night.
