Netherlands 1-0 Ireland
-
Jeroen Hertzberger scored the only goal of the game as the Netherlands inflicted a 1-0 defeat on Ireland to end the Green Machine’s superb challenge at the EuroHockey Championships in London at the semi-final stage.
-
Hertzberger fired home a deflected sweep from close range in the 12th minute to ensure the world’s second best team progressed to Saturday’s final at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
-
Mitch Darling responded almost immediately with a darting run into the circle, but his blistering shot was pushed onto the post by goalkeeper Jaap Stockmann.
-
Conor Harte, Paul Gleghorne and Ronan Gormley all took knocks in what was a physical encounter at times, with both teams picking up a green and yellow card each.
-
Ireland’s only penalty corner was expertly run down and deflected wide, while the Green Machine defence kept the Dutch penalty corner attack at bay. The Netherlands had 18 circle entries but only five shots on goal.
-
Darling and Shane O'Donoghue went close for an Ireland side ranked 14 in the world which achieved its best performance at the championships, while Davy Harte was a goliath in goal, denying Robert van der Horst, Mirco Pruijser and Robbert Kemperman in quick succession in the closing stages.
-
Craig Fulton’s charges face England in Saturday’s bronze medal match at 2pm, after the hosts were beaten 3-2 in a shootout by Germany.
