Walsh reported to quit for USA
27 Aug 2015 12:12
There are doubts over the future of Irish High Performance boxing coach Billy Walsh, who is reported to be considering a move to America.
-
The Irish Sun and Irish Independent are reporting that Walsh may take up a new position as head of the USA women’s boxing programme.
-
The Irish Sports Council was under the impression that Walsh had agreed a new deal with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, however that deal fell apart after the association changed their stance on the package.
-
The offer on the table from the USA is rumoured to be far superior to what Walsh was being offered to stay at home, although Walsh’s decision is not believed to be based on money.
-
Walsh represented Ireland at the Seoul Games in 1988 and has guided Irish boxers to seven Olympic medals during his time as coach.
-
The Irish coach was set to lead a team of seven Irish boxers to this year's World Championships in Doha, which are also qualifiers for next year's Olympics.
-
RTÉ Sport contacted the IABA, which was unavailable for comment at the time.
