McCullough sensationally stopped
30 Jul 2015 23:11
Belfast featherweight Marc McCullough was sensationally stopped in the first round tonight against Hungary’s Zoltan Kovacs in Bielefeld, Germany.
-
McCullough, who has seen very little ring time in the last nine months due to a hand injury, was expected to use tonight’s fight as a stepping stone to a high-profile encounter, however, the WBO European belt holder was dropped midway through the opening round and failed to get through to the bell.
-
The WBO fourth ranked boxer in the division appeared to get caught with a right hand to the side of the head, followed by a left hook, after 40 seconds of the opening round, which led to a knock-down.
-
And despite getting straight back to his feet, McCullough never appeared to regain his composure and suffered some heavy blows over the following sixty seconds, which led to another knock-down.

-
McCullough’s corner threw in the towel as the referee looked like he was about to step in to call off the contest as the Belfast man suffered his first defeat in 12 professional fights, which included a victory over Limerick’s Willie Casey. McCullough's only other defeat came in his second professional fight when he lost a four-round fight on points.
