Irish author's debut is Amazon hit
27 Aug 2015 12:12
First time Irish author Ann O'Loughlin has said she is "thrilled and rather overwhelmed" after her debut novel The Ballroom Café made it onto the top 20 list of bestsellers of the year so far on Amazon in the UK.
-
Despite being published just three months ago, the book has already racked up sales of over 150,000 online. The paperback version has shifted more than 5000 copies, largely on the back of hundreds of favourable reviews on the retailer's website and through book clubs.
-
The Ballroom Café tackles the issue of illegal adoption of children from Ireland to the United States from Mother and Baby homes and focuses on two sisters living in Co. Wicklow.

A well known journalist currently writing for the Irish Examiner, O'Loughlin told RTÉ she is taken aback at the novel's success.
-
"I'm absolutely thrilled and rather overwhelmed for a first time novelist to do so well. It's humbling to think that so many people are enjoying The Ballroom Café," she said.
-
She also spoke of how well the novel is doing overseas saying people can relate to the topic of forced-illegal adoptions because "this also happened in Australia, it happened in Spain and I think that's why it struck a chord internationally.
-
"I suppose the well of loss is in the hearts of so many women. Who could not be moved by that?"
-
O'Loughlin revealed the secret of her writing success is early starts before she gets stuck into the day job of journalism. She said: "I get up at 5am and work for two hours. One of the nice things about fiction, you get to linger, to linger over the words...you get to stay as long as you like."
