Lieutenant wins Thurles Grade Two
26 Feb 2015 17:05
Gigginstown House stud enjoyed a one-two in the Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle at Thurles, but not in the order generally expected. Milsean was sent off the 4-5 favourite for champion trainer Willie Mullins and everything seemed to be going to plan when he approached the last in front. He was awkward over it, though, allowing Sub Lieutenant to get away from the flight with more momentum and the Sandra Hughes-trained 7-2 chance claimed the Grade Two prize by five and a half lengths. The fire still burns brightly for Rubi Light, who battled bravely to land the Thurles Racecourse Rated Chase. Robbie Hennessy's Grade One winner hadn't managed to get his head in front for more than three years but showed more signs of life when second at Clonmel earlier this month. Having cut out much of the running, the 13-8 favourite was headed by He'llberemembered and the strong-travelling Arnaud, but responded to all of Davy Russell's urgings and got back up to beat Arnaud by three-quarters of a length. Perfect Promise has kept decent company during her brief career and showed her appreciation for a drop in class by landing the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Beginners Chase. Jimmy Mangan's 12-1 shot touched down over three out in a share of the lead, held a clear advantage at the next, and a slick leap at the last helped her on her way to a 21-length defeat of Carrigeen Kigelia. Samson Bill (4-1) was second to Champion Bumper contender Pylonthepressure in a bumper at this venue just before Christmas and showed that kind of form to take the honours in the Killinan Maiden Hurdle. The Littleton Handicap Hurdle turned into a family affair as Eoin O'Connell steered home his father Eamonn's Captainofthefleet (9-1), while the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Flat Race went the way of Elusive Ivy.
