Walsh rules Foxrock out of Gold Cup
05 Mar 2015 13:01
Trainer Ted Walsh has ruled Foxrock out of a tilt at the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup.
-
The seven-year-old had attracted ante-post support at 16/1 and shorter after big wins at Leopardstown and Naas and good runs in several other big handicaps over the winter.
-
Owner Barry Connell was though to be considering supplementing the horse for the race at a cost of €38,000.
-
But Walsh shut the door on the prospect of going for the big race at the Game On 2fm/BoyleSports Cheltenham Preview event in Leopardstown last night, comparing the step up to "waking up one morning and deciding you’re going to play for Ireland".
-
Walsh said: "I won’t enter him in the Gold Cup. You can’t run in the Gold Cup as an afterthought. It would be like getting some morning and saying you’re going to play for Ireland. I didn’t enter him in January, so I would say no."
-
Silviniaco Conti is the 3/1 favourite for the race but Walsh was not inclined to go for the any of those at the top of the market, or last year’s winner Lord Windermere, which will re-oppose under Davy Russell.
-
He said: "I think Davy Russell gave Lord Windermere the ride of all rides last year. He will want everything going according to plan for him to win it again. I like Oliver Sherwood’s horse Many Clouds. He is a good, tough hardy horse though he wouldn’t want it too quick. Holywell is another one I’d give a chance to."
