RTÉ at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2012

At the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2012, which opened to the public at the RDS today, RTÉ, Ireland's Public Service Broadcaster, promised a wealth of activity to students, listeners and viewers alike until the exhibition draws to a close on Saturday.
RTÉ Digital Radio station RTÉjr Radio kicked off today's activities with a live broadcast from the RTÉ stand at 10am. In the afternoon Rick O'Shea took up the baton and broadcast his show live at 2.00pm; listeners got the chance to see the goings on via a live webcast on the 2fm website.
Further radio output will include RTÉ Radio's digital dance music station RTÉ Pulse also broadcasting from the stand on Friday and Saturday - And if you think you have what it takes to be a radio presenter why not drop by for the chance to participate in one of RTÉ lyric fm's Outreach workshops.
RTÉ Television and Young People's Programming also have a significant presence at the exhibition. RTÉ Two's Two Tube is there today and tomorrow (Friday 13 January), with presenter Paul Walsh keen to capture all the excitement of the event as well as a selection of the weird and wonderful projects on display, while children's news programme news2day sees presenters Aidan and Carla meeting some of this year's enthusiastic competitors.
One of the most unique presentations at the RTÉ stand is from the national broadcaster's weather team. As well as presenting a series of daily live bulletins, the team are on hand throughout the three days of the exhibition to explain the science behind the weather and give visitors an opportunity to present their own weather bulletin using the hi-tech studio equipment that makes it all possible.
The popular RTÉ One programme Nationwide broadcasts from the Exhibition on Friday evening at 7.00pm. Reporter Joan O'Sullivan meets last year's winner Alexander Amini whose project on tennis sensor data analysis has met with great success since then, while reporter Damien Tiernan takes a look at the history of science in Ireland.
Not only that, but RTÉ Education and Science correspondent, Emma O'Kelly, will be on the ground reporting on all the days' happenings for a special daily news report.
RTÉ is also the official sponsor of the Social and Behavioural Sciences category, and has a host of interactive activities for visitors to enjoy at the RTÉ Stand in the Industries Hall. Visitors can try out RTÉ Player's new iPhone and iPad Apps and also browse the online version, and of course, view the wealth of content and information available on RTÉ.ie. The RTÉ online news team are covering the event for a live blog daily which can be followed at RTÉ.ie/news, m.rte.ie and the RTÉ News Now App.
For those who want to find out more about SAORVIEW, Ireland's new free digital television service, regular demonstrations at the stand show the benefits of digital broadcasting over analogue as well as highlighting how young people can play a valuable role in helping their families and communities make the switch, before the analogue switch off date of 24 October 2012.
Last but by no means least RTÉ weather presenter Karina Buckley, presents a special award at the official awards ceremony on Friday evening, celebrating 50 years of television in Ireland. The RTÉ TV50 Award will be awarded to the project that best demonstrates effective communication of complex scientific information to broader society through the use of a variety of communications tools. The winner will receive a Nordmende SAORVIEW approved television for their school and a second television for a nominated local community group of their choice.
