RTÉ wins six awards at Justice Media Awards 2013
13 June 2013: RTÉ has won six awards at the Law Society of Ireland's Justice Media Awards 2013 in the categories of Court Reporting for Broadcast; Television News; National Radio; and Television Features and Documentaries.
RTÉ News journalist Vivienne Traynor was announced as the winner of the Justice Media Award in the ‘Court Reporting for Broadcast Media’ category for her Six One News report on ‘Marie Fleming’s assisted suicide case’. The judges said that her report “presented a brilliant analysis of the legal implications of the Marie Fleming case – the first of its kind to come before the Irish courts.”
The winner of the National Radio Category was RTÉ News’ North East Correspondent Richard Dowling for his This Week radio report: ‘Missing Chapter, Missing Answers’. Richard’s report focused on the collusion between British security forces and loyalists in the murder of Belfast solicitor, Pat Finucane. The judges praised his report and commended his “journalistic curiosity” and said it “has provided significant new information on the investigation into collusion”.
The winners of the Television News category were producer Maire Kearney and presenter Miriam O’Callaghan for their Prime Time special interview with Praveen Halappanavar. In the first of two exclusive televised interviews, Praveen shared his experience of the last days of his wife’s life in hospital and his determination to establish the truth of what happened. The judges said it was a “sensitive and insightful interview” and that it “shed new light on the events that had unfolded in the hospital and the reasons why Praveen Halappanavar had expressed his refusal to take part in the HSE enquiry.”
Producer Mary Fanning and presenter Mary Kennedy of RTÉ’s Nationwide were awarded a Merit Certificate in the Television Features and Documentaries Category for their programme: ‘The Law’ which looked behind the scenes at the Four Courts and Criminal Courts of Justice, explaining the workings of the courts.
A merit certificate in the National Radio category was awarded to presenter Peter Ward and producer Fiona Kelly for their RTÉ Radio 1 series ‘The Law Makers’, a range of interviews with six eminent member of the legal profession. A Merit Certificate was awarded for the programme featuring an interview with Mr Justice Donal Barrington, former judge of the Supreme Court and a judge of the Court of First Instance of the European Union.
Reporter Barry Cummins, and producers Mark Coughlan and Tanya Sillem were awarded a merit certificate for their Prime Time report on Section 29 Warrants. The report examined the fallout from the Supreme Court ruling which struck down the law on Section 29 warrants which for 36 years had allowed Gardai to issue their own search warrants.
