Today is World Radio Day 2013
13 February: Today is World Radio Day 2013, and the day is being marked across RTÉ Radio.
February 13 is the day proclaimed by UNESCO and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate Radio as a medium, to improve international cooperation between broadcasters, and to encourage major networks and community radio alike to promote access to information and freedom of expression over the airwaves. UNESCO encourages all countries to celebrate World Radio Day by planning activities in partnership with regional, national and international broadcasters, non-governmental organisations, the media and the public.
RTÉ Radio 1 will broadcast specially recorded inserts from a range of personalities, reflecting on the power of radio. You can get a sample of the inserts here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tE1rV5OFjs
RTÉ Raidio na Gaeltachta is also marking World Radio Day 2013 on air, and has brought its own unique colour to this celebration of radio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhbcPIbTVL0&feature=youtu.be
Clare Duignan, MD RTÉ Radio, says: “All international Radio organisations are invited to actively inform their listeners about World Radio Day 2013. RTÉ Radio is delighted to strengthen WRD 2013 by taking part on and off air. Radio is up there as one of our most universal media. Every day in Ireland, 1,866,000 (52%) of adults listen to RTÉ Radio. It’s an awesome statistic, and testament to the scale and power of the medium.
