Hall of Fame honour for Seán Bán Breathnach at PPI Awards
5 October 2012:
It has been announced today that the PPI Radio Awards this year will include a Hall of Fame for the first time, and that Seán Bán Breathnach of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta will be one of three who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the PPI Awards, the Oscars of Irish radio, next Friday 12 October in Lyrath Estate, Kilkenny, together with the late Gerry Ryan of RTÉ 2fm and Candy Devine of Downtown Radio in Northern Ireland.
Seán Bán Breathnach has been working as a radio broadcaster for over 40 years. He started his career with Radio Éireann in 1969 when he presented Popseó na Máirte, the first Irish-language pop music show, and became the first Gaeilgeoir pinup.
Seán started working with Raidió na Gaeltachta part time in 1972, and has been working with the service ever since. He has worked on a variety of programmes including magazine and music shows, but is particularly well-known for his work on sports programmes. His commentary on boxer Katie Taylor’s Olympic victory in August went viral, and has been heard by now by hundreds of thousands of people. Seán Bán has been presenting sports programme Spórt an tSathairn on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta for nineteen years, and he can also be heard on western magazine programme Iris Aniar.
Ceannaire of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Edel Ní Chuireáin, congratulated Seán on his award:
“This is a great honour for Seán, and for RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, and a fitting tribute to his excellent work in radio for over 40 years”.
