2fm's Mastermind turns Maestro:
17 September 2012: Rick O'Shea to conduct the RTÉ Concert Orchestra
RTÉ 2fm’s Rick O’Shea will fulfil a lifelong ambition on Thursday when he conducts the RTÉ Concert Orchestra on the stage of the National Concert Hall. As part of the concert Shaken Not Stirred: The Music of Bond, James Bond, Rick will conduct the orchestra in the famous 007 theme.
Says Rick: “I saw famous maestro Daniel Barenboim in action on TV in the BBC Proms this summer, and I thought, that’s something I would love to try. So I talked about it on 2fm and thankfully the good people at the RTÉ Concert Orchestra happened to be listening. So they approached me to see if I’d like to try my hand at conducting as part of the upcoming Bond night. They didn’t have to ask twice!”
Shaken, Not Stirred will be conducted by the RTÉ CO’s Principal Conductor David Brophy, but he will make way on the podium for Rick for one special number, the Bond theme.
Rick doesn't read music, adding to the challenge, but it turns out that he has more than one Mastermind specialist subject up his sleeve – Bond music is another area of expertise, so he knows the theme better than most. To prepare, David Brophy will show Rick the basics of conducting tomorrow morning then, on Wednesday, Rick will stand in front of an orchestra of almost 60 musicians for his first attempt in rehearsal.
Tickets are still available for the concert itself (National Concert Hall 01 417 0000/www.nch.ie or www.rte.ie/concertorchestra) and listeners can follow Rick’s Journey every day at 2pm on 2fm on Rick in the Afternoon.
