Get on Board with RTÉ at The Tall Ships Races 2011
RTÉ will be making waves at Waterford Tall Ships Races 2011 with Radio and Television broadcasts throughout the event. Taking place in Waterford City, from Thursday 30th June until Sunday 3rd July, over 500,000 visitors are expected, and RTÉ will be there.
RTÉ Director General Noel Curran said “RTÉ’s commitment to the regions, to major national events, and to shared celebration and experience has been demonstrated very strongly this year. We are very pleased to show that commitment again to Waterford and Munster as the nation turns its eyes to the Tall Ships’ visit. Through our broadcast and online services, and our unparalleled nationwide reach, we will play our part to help make this special and spectacular event a resounding success.”
RTÉ Radio 1’s Derek Mooney will kick-start the celebrations with the official opening at Millennium Plaza on Thursday afternoon at 3.30pm, when The Tall Ships Races 2011 will be launched officially by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
The RTÉ marquee, located on Meagher’s Quay, will be busy with many top RTÉ Radio programmes coming live from the heart of the action. RTÉ Radio 1 programmes broadcasting live from the Viking City include The John Murray Show, The Ronan Collins Show and The John Creedon Show. RTÉ Radio 1’s maritime programme Seascapes will broadcast a Tall Ships Races 2011 Special on Friday at 11.00pm. Also on Friday, presenter Aonghus McAnally, along with Éanna Ní Lamhna, Ken Whelan and Mary Kingston, will bring listeners a special edition of Mooney Goes Wild, live at 3 from the Waterford quays.
RTÉ 2fm’s Breakfast with Hector will come live from the RTÉ 2fm Roadcaster, bright and early on Friday morning from 7.00 to 9.00am. RTÉ 2fm’s Weekenders, with Ruth Scott and Paddy McKenna, are also part of the RTÉ 2fm crew at The Tall Ships; they’ll be featuring a special Waterford edition of the Big Busking Challenge on Saturday 2nd July.
RTÉ lyric fm will also be at Tall Ships, with Liz Nolan’s Lunchtime Classics on Thursday 30th July playing two hours of the glorious seafaring music. Paul Herriott In Tempo will be broadcasting quayside on Friday from 10.00am to 12noon, while George Hamilton will make smooth sailing of Saturday morning with The Hamilton Scores live from the RTÉ marquee.
RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta’s pirate queen, Helen Ní Shé, will host the Munster magazine show An Saol Ó Dheas live from the RTÉ marquee with a special emphasis on matters nautical.

RTÉ Weather will dock in Waterford and broadcast two live weather bulletins each day on RTÉ One Television from different locations along the quayside. RTÉ Weather’s Audrey McGrath and Nuala Carey, together with Met Éireann’s Gerald Fleming, will keep viewers up to date on the weather, both locally and around the country.
RTÉ’s Nationwide is dedicating two special programmes to the Tall Ships Races 2011. The first will be a look back at the Tall Ships last visit to Waterford in 2005 and preview what will be happening at this year’s event, on Wednesday, 29th June, at 7.00pm on RTÉ One.
When it’s all over, the Nationwide team will bring you a Tall Ships Races Special, co-presented by Mary Kennedy and Damien Tiernan, on Sunday 3rd July, at 7.30pm on RTÉ One. RTÉ’s South East Correspondent Damien Tiernan will be reporting from the event for RTÉ News on Television and Radio.
Fancy trying your hand at radio presenting? If you believe you are a broadcaster in the making then join RTÉ lyric fm presenters Trish Taylor and Eamonn Lenihan and try your hand at presenting classical music radio. Lucky members of the public can learn the ropes of radio presenting as part of RTÉ lyric fm’s Educational Outreach Project on Thursday and Friday from 2.00pm to 3.30pm in the RTÉ marquee.
Ever wondered what it would be like to present a weather forecast? Visitors to the RTÉ marquee will get the chance to have a go at presenting a weather forecast themselves. So if you’re a ‘weather wannabe’ and think you have what it takes, be sure to drop by.
Do you want to be a cover star? The RTÉ Guide is joining in the Tall Ships action with its ‘Become a Star for the Day’ road show. Visitors to the RTÉ marquee can have their photo taken for their very own RTÉ Guide commemorative Tall Ships cover. All ‘wannabe’ cover girls and guys have to do is show proof of purchase of the week’s edition. The RTÉ Guide will be on sale in the RTÉ marquee, at a special price of €1.00, and includes a special Tall Ships Race Supplement.
