He’s been the voice and face of The Cure since 1976. He’s been imitated countless times, but you’ll find it hard to confuse his vocals with anyone else’s. Outside of The Cure, Smith has featured with Crystal Castles, and Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll. Dan looks at Robert Smith’s music with and without The Cure is this week’s Back & Forth.

We have three very different albums for you this week. The first is album number two from The Hot Sprockets. Their debut ‘Honeyskippin’ was a joyous affair, and ‘Brother Nature’ brings things to an even higher level. The Hot Sprockets write strong songs that are steeped with echoes from the past; they’ve never made any better than those that make up ‘Brother Nature’.

Luke Haines has always done things his own was, whether as part of The Auteurs or throughout his solo career. How does a ‘psychedelic concept trilogy’ sound to you? ‘New York In The ‘70’s’ is part of the trilogy, and it works wonderfully. Surreal and ethereal are two words that this album brings to the fore. You have to listen to this album to fully grasp what a wonderful album Haines has put together.

‘Amber Sands’ is the debut album from Austrian-born, Sligo-based musician Claudia Schwab. It’s the sound of a big pot of cultures and sounds mixed together with just the right measure. Some albums take you on a journey; ‘Amber Sands’ is like taking a year off, and making your way around the world.

In 1995 there were few albums that stood out with such a striking nature as Gavin Friday’s ‘Shag Tobacco’. In this part of the world we were in the middle of Britpop mania; Oasis Vs Blur, Pulp, Cast, and countless others. ‘Shag Tobacco’ couldn’t have been any farther removed from this; drawing inspiration from Berlin and Cabaret (the original interpretation of that word).

After 19 years, this album still has a challenging sound; it still stands out. Dan feature tracks from ‘Shag Tobacco’ for this week’s Buried Treasure.
