    Dan Hegarty - The Alternative

The Alternative To Sleep! Alt Rock, Metal, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Electro, plus the RTE 2fm studio Sessions, & Live music from across Europe.

He's the voice of The Black Keys, but he's also done loads of other stuff outside of the band. Where does he find the time? That's another question! His production credits include work with Bombino, Hanni El Khatib, Dr John, and Michael Kiwanuka.

Along with the 10 Black Keys albums, he's also released a solo album (2009's 'Keep It Hid'), and the excellent BlakRoc collaboration album. This week's Back & Forth music from the many different parts of his diverse career.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela's career has progressed beyond anyone's expectations; perhaps even theirs! With '9 Dead Alive', they illustrate why they've been embraced on just about every inhabited place on planet earth. The excellent musicianship is complimented by songs that show that this duo is still frowning and developing.

A debut album, a second album, a 15th album; the number doesn't matter; they all present a unique challenge. We Cut Corners have blown away any doubts as to whether they could improve upon their impressive debut. 'T H I N K N O T H I N G' shows that the Dublin-based two-piece can balance angst, melody, and imagination, and create tunes with more bite than a 20ft Great White Shark!

Cultivating a solo career when you're the face of one of the most iconic bands of modern times can't be straightforward. Damon Albarn has shown that there's more to him than Blur with Gorillaz, The Good The Bad & The Queen, Rocket Juice & The Moon, and now with his debut solo album. 'Everyday Robots' is not a Blur album minus the three other members; it's very much Albarn flexing his artistic muscles in a different and impressive fashion.

Engine Alley were one of the few Irish acts from the late 1980s/early 1990s that actually made an impact outside their native shores. For the all the musical riches that Ireland had at the time, very few had any form of success abroad.

'Shot In The Light' was released in 1995, and followed their much-lauded debut 'A Sonic Holiday'. If 'A Sonic Holiday' was the sound of that youthful exuberance that debut albums can sometimes harness, 'Shot In The Light' captures the band in their prime. It earned them much praise, but nowhere near as much as it should have. Calling it a master stroke is not false praise.
