THE ALTERNATIVE: BRETON LIVE AT LES DOCKS (SWITZERLAND)

Named after the French surrealist André Breton, London band Breton released their debut album 'Other People's Problems' in 2011. They've remixed material people like Lana Del Ray, Trick, and alt-J, while maintaining a busy live schedule. Hear them as they were at Les Docks a couple of months ago on The Alternative with Dan.

Recorded by Eurosonic at Les Docks, Lausanne on February 18, 2014.

ALBUMS OF THE WEEK – SOHN, RECORD STORE GAY, & THE AFGHAN WHIGS

‘Tremors’ is one of those albums that is almost guaranteed to be in the higher reaches of the numerous 2014 year-end Album Polls. What exactly Sohn has done right here is hard to put into words, but almost everything wouldn’t be too much of an exaggeration. Fans of James Blake, Jeff Buckley, and Lali Puna, ‘Tremors’ is for you.

Le Galaxie covering ‘Fade’ To Grey’, Crayonsmith navigating his way through Lykke Li’s ‘I Follow Rivers’, Sleep Thieves tackling ‘Love Is A Stranger’, Kate’s Party doing No Doubt’s ‘Just A Girl’... Ladies and gentlemen it’s the 2014 Record Store Gay album, and it’s magic!

The Afghan Whigs could have quite easily remained in the shadows and left their cult status as it is, but they’ve opted to come out of the shadows and record what might just be their best album. ‘Do To The Beast’ shows no signs of a band that haven’t released an album in over a decade; more a confidence and hunger that you’d expect to hear from a band launching themselves into their debut album.

BURIED TREASURE - 'EXPLOSIVE' BY THE SHADES

'Explosive' is one of those phenomenally good albums that somehow managed to slip by without enough people ever getting to hear it. Released in 2004, you couldn't help but notice that this was a special album; fragile beauty, infectious grooves, and a mixture of influences that worked wonderfully together. If it appeared today, fans of The XX, and Darkside would consume it with considerable vigour.
