JOHNNY CASH - BACK & FORTH

So much has been said and written about Johnny Cash, there really isn’t anything that you can add. His music speaks for itself. Friday, March 28th sees the release of ‘Out Among The Stars’ a new album comprising of 12 recently discovered Johnny Cash studio recordings recorded in 1981 and 1984).

With that in mind, Dan will play tracks from various stages of the great man’s career on this week’s Back & Forth.

ALBUMS OF THE WEEK – AUGUST WELLS, SISYPHUS, & FUR IMMER

If you're familiar with the landscape of Irish music, then you'll know the name Ken Griffin. He was vocalist with the seminal Rollerskate Skinny, then Kid Silver, and more recently Favourite Sons. His latest musical outlet is as part of August Wells. ‘A Living & A Dying Game’ is a smart and often sophisticated album, but don't let that put you off! Griffin is growing as a vocalist and lyricist, and these songs fit both of these perfectly.

    SISYPHUS ‘SISYPHUS’

What do you get when you get three different musical minds to work together? Sisyphus of course. No not the Greek myth, the musical outfit that comprises of Sufjan Stevens, Son Lux, and Serengeti. Let's not start using the description 'Supergroup' here, but what they've created certainly warrants some superlatives. Offbeat and straight up odd at times 'Sisyphus' is a strangely endearing album that you'll like immediately, or failing that soon after.

    FUR IMMER ‘MARCH’

Für Immer; the band that had me scratching my head for a time when it came to pronouncing their name correctly. Luckily, their music has never done such a thing. 'March' is an inspired debut album that is as inviting as the season which its title appears in. There's a nod to the past here too, one that I can't quite pin-point; it's driving me mad!

BURIED TREASURE: SAUL WILLIAMS - 'SAUL WILLIAMS'

When Saul Williams released his second album 'Saul Williams' in 2004, it was labelled 'Industrial Hip Hop'. It's a description that fits to a certain extent, but it fails to capture the true diversity of this wonderful album.  'Saul Williams' is a poetic, powerful, and ruthlessly refreshing album, that sits somewhere between Public Enemy, Gil Scott-Heron, and Beastie Boys at their classic best.
