DAMON ALBARN - BACK & FORTH

Once on the receiving end of trouncing in the Battle of Britpop, Damon Albarn's career has seen him do all sorts of wonderful things since the aforementioned mid 1990s. Whether it's Blur, Gorillaz, The Good, The Bad & The Queen, or his production work on Bobby Womack's album 'The Bravest Man In The Universe', Albarn has proven to be a far greater creative force than anyone could have imagined when Blur formed in the late 1980s.

His off-beat approach to music continues with the imminent release of his debut solo album 'Everybody's Robot'. The lead single of the same name grows, grows, and grows on you; it's safe to say that Albarn is a special talent. Dan looks Back & Forth through his catalogue of work on The Alternative.

ALBUMS OF THE WEEK – HOUSE OF COSY CUSHIONS, ILLUM SPHERE, & SCARLET CHIVES

The Dutch/Irish connection of House Of Cosy Cushions has come up with another strong album with ‘Spell’. HOCC was formed by Dutch-English musician and visual artist Richard Bolhuis. So where does the Irish connection come into it? Bolhuis lived in Ireland for many years, and will be back for live dates next month. ‘Spell’ is HOCC’s best work; diverse, clever, and extremely infectious.

Illum Sphere is Manchester DJ/Remixer/Artist Ryan Hunn. The wonderfully off-kilter ‘Ghosts Of Then And Now’ is like a bold middle-fingered salute to a lot of what’s going on in music right now. It’s electronic eclecticism at its very best.

Scarlet Chives’ sound is located somewhere between Fever Ray and Bjork. The Danish act will unleash the beauty that is ‘This is Protection’ on March 21st. It’s been called Dream Pop, but there’s something a bit more sinister going on here! ‘Hunting’ is an album that you should track down at all costs.

BURIED TREASURE – CAP PAS CAP ‘HAUNTED LIGHT’

Irish act Cap Pas Cap released their debut (and so far only) album in 2010. Call is Dark Pop, but this only tells you part of what makes ‘Haunted Light’ such an outstanding album. The album’s sound was likened to Ladytron and Ladyhawk, but there’s something slightly grittier about it. You could call this a classic that never was; this would be the best description perhaps.
