Would You Believe: Shot at Dawn
Among the many tragedies of the First World War is the story of
the 306 men ‘shot at dawn’, 26 of whom were Irish. Executed
for alleged offences such as desertion or cowardice, the dubious
circumstances surrounding their convictions eventually led to
official UK Government pardons.
Would You Believe meets Dublin bus driver Peter Mulvany,
who runs the Irish Shot at Dawn Campaign and reporter
Mick Peelo meets some of the families who have finally seen their
war dead exonerated.

Sown in Tears and Blood
The RTÉ TV Archive Production Unit has restored Sown in Tears
and Blood, presented by Myles Dungan and first broadcast in
1998. Irish veterans of the Great War and their families tell
their stories while a group of teenagers, some of whose ancestors
had fought or fallen in the conflict, come together to build a tower
in their honour. Beautifully illustrated with archive footage
of the time, this film looks at the personal experiences of those
who were in the trenches while exploring the complex reasons which
led them to the front lines. At the same time, it shows how a new
generation uncovers the part their family members played in this
savage conflict.
